The Ballad of Clonmel Showgrounds Part 1

Gather friends of Clonmel as I’m representing
though it may be too late in the day for repenting
we had a prized asset near the middle of our town
which we all used to know as the Clonmel Showground
It belonged to us all, rich, poor, young and old,
other towns would’nt swap it for pockets of gold,
we could’ve chose playgrounds and such for our site,
or parks for our townsfolk to rest in the sunlight
but some in the know now grabbed a good firm hold
for it was surely worth forty pieces of silver I’m told
Some stood up for the town’s sake and some did not
Being more in thrall of what could be had from the pot
Some of our leaders battled innocently using fair means
They had no chance with all the shenanigans behind the scenes
Now we can regret at our leisure losing our public amenities
In exchange for shutting down some of our old shops activities.
